The term xylene refers the group of three benzene derivatives that are used as solvents. These three benzenes are used as solvents in various industries including rubber, printing and leather industries. Usually, xylene is a colorless chemical and have a sweet fragrance, but this is very flammable. Xylems are used as inhalant drugs due to their intoxicating properties. Another isotope of xylene is p-xylene, the monomer and it is used in the manufacturing of polymers. Further, p-xylene is used as cleaning agent for silicon wafers, steel and chips. Xylene can be seen in small amounts in gasoline and airplane fuel.
